How to Treat Post Covid Fatigue According to Chinese Medicine

Hello dear Readers!

In this new wave of the Omicron variant of Covid 19, I have received many patients with sequelae of Fatigue. Have you ever wondered, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, what does this mean? Why can a disease that primarily affects the Lungs cause such extreme fatigue?

Let’s think according to the 5 Elements to better understand what is happening with our patients.

In Chinese Medicine we know that the Lung is the body’s biggest energy producer. This is because the Lungs is responsible for producing Defense Energy (Wei Qi) and Nutritive Energy (Yin Qi) through the union of Air and Food Energies (Gu Qi).

When the individual contracts Covid, the Lung will be affected even if there are no severe symptoms. The Omicron variant has been classified as a milder form of the disease (even though severe cases are still reported) and its main symptoms are mild upper respiratory system respiratory problems and fatigue.

Many patients report not being able to do simple things like talking on the phone, doing the dishes or playing the piano. And unlike the first version, what the patient reports is tiredness, not shortness of breath.

As the Lung is responsible for the body’s high energy production, when affected, it will try to correct its production and balanced functioning using the strength of its mother organ, that is, the Spleen. The Spleen, in turn, is responsible for capturing energy from food, and at first it will try to help the Lung in reestablishing their functions, however, with the average duration of the illness being 10 days, the Spleen becomes overloaded, not being able to perform its functions, among them, sending Gu Qi so that the Lungs work again.

Thus, fatigue is installed in the body, due to a low energy production and a low use of food.

Following the Spleen, the Stomach will be impaired. As the first viscera with a digestive function, the Stomach is responsible for breaking down food, maturing it and sending it to the Spleen to extract its essences. Since the Spleen will be weak and overloaded, it will not be able to carry out the reception of matter that comes from the Stomach.

Without reception by the Spleen, the Stomach diminishes its functions, as its work will not be efficiently used by the Spleen. With a deficient Stomach, the patient will have tiredness, lack of appetite, difficulty in digestion, intestinal malfunction, decreased production of Yin fluids by the Stomach, which will result in dry mouth, burning in the stomach and in more severe cases, persistent fever.

When the Stomach weakens, the entire energy-forming chair is broken, so the patient’s tiredness is severe. It is important, therefore, that the therapist knows how to evaluate and treat a post-Covid patient, not only strengthening his Lung, but also the Spleen and Stomach.

I suggest the following points:

  • To strengthen the Lungs: Lu7, Lu9, CV17, in auriculotherapy, Lung point.
  • To strengthen the Spleen: SP2, SP3, in auriculotherapy, Spleen point.
  • To strengthen the Stomach: CV15, CV12, ST36 and SP6, in auriculotherapy, Stomach point.

Once the function of the Spleen is reestablished, which will be able to capture the energy of the Stomach and strengthening the Lungs so that it no longer steals the energy from the Spleen in excess, the patient will be able to resume normal energy production and the symptom of tiredness. and fatigue will resolve more quickly.

Hope it was helpful.

A big hug to everyone.

Whole Wheat Flour x Weight Loss x Chinese Medicine

Good morning readers!

Today, let’s talk about whole wheat flour, weight loss and what is the view of Chinese Medicine about the topics, improving your life.

A vast number of people think that replacing Wheat Flour for it’s Whole variation (Whole Wheat Flour) in their daily diet will increase the weight loss speed and even believe that flour is a ‘light’ food.

Unfortunately, that point of view about wheat flour is wrong. The wheat flour, being it whole or not, as the name dictates, comes from wheat and has amid in it’s composition, thus making it dangerous for weight loss diets or even for diabetes diets.

What is Amid?

Amid is a carbohydrate, made mostly by glucose. Produced by green plants as an energy storage. It is the most abundant and common carbohydrate in the human diet, found in vast quantities in foods such as potatoes, rice and wheat.

** keep in mind: people who suffer from diabetes cannot consume huge amounts of amid!

If both of them have amid, what are the benefits of consuming whole wheat flour?

Whole wheat flour is obtained by grinding whole wheat grains and maintains the structure of the bran and germ, which are the main nutritional sources of the grain. The main advantage over white flour is that it retains nutrients such as fiber and iron that are lost during the processing of common wheat flour.

As a result of this, the whole wheat flour has lots of health benefits, such as improvement on the intestine functioning (due to fibers), extension on the time that it takes for you to be hungry again (since it takes a bit longer to be processed), reduction in blood bad cholesterol levels and glucose reduction, if it’s consumed with moderation.

What about Chinese Medicine? How is the Whole Wheat Flour seen?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the wheat is considered a fresh food for Spleen and Stomach, and the wheat’s germ is a cold food. Thus, in huge quantities, it will consume Yang (heat energy) from Spleen, which is the main energy for weight loss.

Besides that, it has the potential to “cool down” Stomach, slowing and making the digestion process harder, resulting in an accumulation of sugar and fats in the body, prejudicing weight loss.

Spleen has the function of removing inner dampness from the body. Due to it’s cold and fresh essence, wheat’s germ and the wheat, are easily associated with humidity, being able to interfere in the Spleen action of removing it (prejudicing it) and in medium-term the patient may present phlegm accumulated on the body.

Phlegm is what creates the “masses” on the human body, such as located fat, cysts, snot (phlegm), tumors, and others.

Therefore, the whole wheat flour, used moderately, in the eventual replacement of other carbohydrate in the diet, will have nutritive benefits, however, if consumed frequently it will harm the metabolism and according to the Chinese Medicine the weight loss is gonna get harder day after day, may even result in further health complications.

A good option for the wheat reduction is the consumption of roots that have neutral energy for Spleen and Stomach and helps strengthen their functions.

You can consume wheat. Preferably the whole (wheat flour). AND ALWAYS with moderation.

My warmest regards!

Anemia in Tradicional Chinese Medicine

Hello readers,

Today we are going to talk a little bit about anemia.

Anemia is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the condition in which the hemoglobin content in the blood is below normal as a result of the lack of one or more essential nutrients. In general, it can be defined as any disease where there is a decrease in the amount of red blood cells.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, blood is produced through the normal function of the Spleen and Kidney. It is said that the Kidney produces bone marrow (responsible for the raw material and “plant” for blood production in the body) and the Spleen transforms the raw material produced in the Kidney into blood itself.

The most common syndromic pattern found in patients with anemia is Deficiency of Spleen Blood, which can occur after major surgery, accidents with a lot of blood loss, poor diet or even genetics.

Chinese medicine can help patients with anemia, using kidney and spleen toning points, such as: KI-3,    KI-6, CV-4, BL-23, BL-52 and SP-6, SP-8, SP-10, BL-20. However, just using acupuncture in cases of anemia, of any kind, will not be enough to totally improve the patient.

This is due to the fact that anemia is a Deficiency Syndrome, so the patient’s goal is to nourish the blood, increase its production, a situation in which only acupuncture needles are unable to perform.

For a better result, the therapist should indicate foods that assist in the production of blood in the body, such as dark green vegetables and roots … In this list we can include: kale, spinach, broccoli, green beans, endive, yam, cassava , parsnips, sweet potatoes, etc … Some grains can also help, such as beans, soybeans and lentils.

If we associate therapeutic feeding with acupuncture, the results will be faster and more effective.

In addition, the herbal medicine Gui Pi Tang is indicated to strengthen the blood of the Spleen and is an ally in the treatment, provided that it has in its entirety, indication for the specific case of the patient.

In auriculotherapy, some points can be used, such as Spleen, Pancreas, Kidney, Metabolism and will keep the patient treated from one session to another.

The association between western and eastern medicines is important in the treatment of anemia. Not only in the supplements and medications that the western doctor can pass, but in particular, in the control by blood tests. To find out if the patient is really better, in addition to his feeling on a daily basis, it is extremely important that the blood test findings are in agreement;)

I hope I helped all of you! We continue taking care of our patients!

A big hug to everyone!
